Doesn't matter how old they are, they are going to be used as a sex symbol. The real problem is the extreme sexism and hypersexualization of basically any female that appears in any form of media. Which is to say, those younger than about 30 don't care, and those older think it's an abomination. It's about the same as the United States. Japan is one of those countries which is weirdly both very progressive in some areas and terribly reactionary in others. I am by no means a Nintendo fan and i think they deserved every criticisms for the straight pairing only issue but not this time.Īre these various "gay incidents" one offs or are the indicative or some larger anti homosexuality thinking in Japan? Honest question. Of course this is subjective and only my own interpretation as i haven't played the game. If anything the meanning i get out of this is an ability to look pass the outer form of a person and it's who they are inside that matters. Soleil actually attracts to the male main character because she saw his female form. Basically, those sorts of narratives are especially popular as anti-gay stances in certain parts of the USA, so it's understandable why people in those regions would be offended by this regardless of whether or not that was the intent.įrom the destructoid article it looks like there weren't any fixes going on, while Ars used words like "now loves him as a male" implying she's now straight. I get what they were going for and don't find it offensive as a result, but I can also see why people in certain regions would be offended by it given that it can be pretty easily interpreted as saying that being gay is something you can "fix" or that it's just a matter of psychology. The issue is less "the main character intentionally converted a gay character to be straight", but rather the idea that a gay character could become attracted to someone in the opposite sex after a single short experience. I didn't get the sense that it was in the article here. The spiked drink wasn't purposefully to reverss the sexuality of the gay (or bisexual?) character. With context this doesn't sound as bad as Ars article makes it out to be. Which makes me wonder if it's even cut? Assuming that writer is being honest/accurate about the translation, the character in question isn't even gay, they're bisexual at most and only have romantic supports with males.įates actually has a couple gay characters in it as well. Here's a better description of the actual content:
